The American Hockey League is a minor professional ice hockey league in the United States and Canada. The American Hockey League serves as the top developmental league for the National Hockey League. The league played its first season in 1936 as the International-American Hockey League, a cooperation between the Canadian-American Hockey League and the International Hockey League in a "circuit of mutual convenience". After two seasons, the leagues formally merged and the new league, and after the 1939–40 season, the league became known as the American Hockey League.

The 1938–39 season saw the Hershey Bears join as an expansion team. Still active as of the 2012–13 season, the Bears are the oldest continuously operating team in the league. The Rochester Americans, who formed when the Pittsburgh Hornets moved to Rochester, New York in 1956, are the second oldest team.
